The English Language and Information Centre is a subdivision of the Institute of Philology at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. It is a multi-purpose pedagogical and cultural centre that functions as a library/resource centre and seminar room.

The Centre was established in May 1997, when the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Ukraine and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv signed an agreement on its foundation.

In 1997-2008, the English Language and Information Centre was headed by Dr. Olena Bortnychuk who, together with Drs. Lyudmyla Pastushenko and Laryssa Kovalenko, was its “Founding Mother”. Since September 2008, the Centre has been headed by Dr. Olena Fomenko.

The goals of the Centre are:

  • To enhance students’ knowledge of the English language;
  • To expand knowledge of history, political life, culture and education in English-speaking countries;
  • To introduce new methods of language teaching to English language instructors of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

To accomplish these goals, we offer lectures, seminars and discussions with native English-language speakers: Employees of Embassies, representatives of government and non-government organizations, youth organizations and University professors. We also offer presentations by methodologists of British and American publishing houses who introduce the latest dictionaries and English-language textbooks to students and teaching staff of our University. We organize teacher-training workshops for professors and senior students of Taras Shevchenko National University.

We have a small but good library of English-language books ranging from works by Shakespeare to modern writers. We offer a number of reference materials on teaching methodology, linguistics and area studies. We also have a limited number of classroom sets of textbooks available to English language teachers for a semester or an academic year. Among other resources are British and American magazines,videos and DVDs. Most resources were donated by the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Ukraine. Books on American and Canadian studies were donated by the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine and the Embassy of Canada in Ukraine. Most textbooks were donated by representatives of Longman and Macmillan publishing houses. Some books were purchased by the Institute of Philology. Many books were donated by Taras Shevchenko University professors, students and friends of our Centre.
